Praying Backwards

October 29, 2012

Hey everybody!

Jay here, and I’ve got something pretty exciting that I wanted to share with you guys.

With all the politics going on in the news, and in our every day lives right now, it can be quite exhausting.  We see adds, we read articles, shoot, the candidates are even campaigning on our Twitter and Facebook feeds!

Lets be real for a minute.  Some of the adds, scratch that, most of the adds we see are so negative it’s hard to know what is truth, and what is political backwash. Sometimes I feel like candidates spend more money talking bad about the guy running against them, than talking about the good they plan to do themselves.   And honestly, it’s not just in the news, some of our family members, our friends, our co-workers, and even you and I can be down right mean about the candidate we don’t agree with us. I know I have been guilty of that.

The truth of it is: these two men, no matter whether we agree with them or not, they are still wonderfully made in God’s image.  These men have wives. They have children. They have to deal with stress, just like you and I do. These are men that God loves just as much as he loves the rest of us. And when we talk badly about these men, or think badly of them, I think that hurts God’s heart.

Here’s the deal.  The Bible calls Christians to pray.

It doesn’t just say:  “Hey, why don’t’ you take a minute to pray for your buddy…”
It doesn’t just say: “Hey, things are good, why don’t you say a quick prayer…”
It doesn’t just say: “Hey, things in your life really stinks right now, why don’t you say a quick prayer…”
It doesn’t just say: “Hey, pray for that guy that agrees with you on what you say…”
It does say: Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

As we get ready to enter into a very exciting time in America, the leadership at OOTBWC want to challenge you do something outrageous…

We want you to join us in prayer.  But not only that, we want you to join us together in #prayingbackwards

That’s right.  Backwards. On Nov. 6, election day.  Right here, on this blog starting at 6am when the polls open and continuing until they close at 7pm that night.  We’re going to pray backwards.

We are going to pray for both candidates.  But most importantly, we’re going to specifically pray for the candidate we do not vote for.  Now, before you get all bent out of shape, by all means, if you don’t want to put who your voting for on the blog, then don’t.  Just pray for both of them.

We’re going to pray non-partisan.
We’re going to pray for the men that are running for President of our great country.
Pray for their wives.
Pray for their children.
Pray for their health both physical and emotional.
Pray for the people who are around them every day.
Pray blessings over their lives.
Pray that these men would grow in their Faith, and in their relationship with Jesus Christ.

The way this will work, is on November 6th, we will post a blog called “Election 2012: We’re Praying Backwards.” This blog post will become a community prayer wall. A place for all of us to join together, from all across the county, and pray specifically for the requests above.   (which you are obviously not limited to).

The steps:

  1. Check out on Nov 6 and look for the post “Election 2012: We’re Praying Backwards”
  2. Check out the prayer topics from the list above.
  3. Pray.
  4. Pray for the men and their families, not their political stance.
  5. Pray some more.
  6. Pray again.
  7. Post your prayers in the comment section of the blog post. If you don’t want to post your prayer publicly, just leave a comment to let us know you’re praying.
  8. When you’re done, post a link to the blog post on your Facebook wall or tweet using the hashtag #prayingbackwards to invite your friends to pray backwards too.

The Rules:

  1. No politics.  Just prayer

Get the gist?

Lets help cover these men and their families with the love of Christ on this day that we know will be a tremendous amount of stress on both of them.

Are you in? Leave a comment and let us know!

(P.S. – I got the idea from something that was done here.  His name is Carlos Whittaker…check him out, he’s the man.)

Praying for both candidates this morning. No matter who wins it is a job that most people wouldn’t really want. Lord bless the smilies of these two men. Give wisdom to each one as they make decisions that affect all of us. Most if all reveal yourself to them and their families, may they be one with you.
