World Changers-4 D. L. Moody

Born in Northfield Mass, his father died when Moody was just a young boy, he dropped out of school in the 6th grade. At age 17 left Northfield for Boston and became a shoe salesman, working for his uncle. He was so good eventually he was making $5,000 per year, in 1855.

One of the stipulations for working with his uncle was he had to attend Sunday School, his teacher was Edward Kimball. One day Kimball went by the shoe store to ask Moody about his soul. When he got to the shoe store he decided he was afraid he would embarrass Moody and almost turned to go home. Before his nerves got the best of him he said he made a dash for it and went over and laid his hand on Moody’s shoulder and simply said “D.L. will you come to Christ?” Moody said yes.

After this D.L. Moody decided to join the church. In order to do that he had to stand before a board and answer questions about his faith and he failed the test and was denied membership.

There are just some folks that seem a little least likely to succeed and D.L. Moody was one of those who seemed least likely to succeed.

Why would God use such an unlikely guy to Change The World?

“Moody had no BUTs” When Moody said yes to God, he said yes with his whole life.

R.A. Torrey at Moody’s funeral

The Life of D.L. Moody

Moody wanted so badly to share his faith, he went to a YMCA mission and asked if there was anything he could do to help and they sent him out to try and get boys to come to Sunday School. 1st week he brought 18 boys.

Started a mission Sunday School in a rented Train Car, That Sunday School grew to 600 students.

D.L. Moody led over 1 million people into a Relationship with Christ.

“Out of 100 men, one will read the Bible, the other 99 will read the Christian.” D.L. Moody

“The world has yet to see what God will do with, and for, and through, and in, and by the man who gives himself up wholly to Him.”  Henry Varley

With the help of the Holy Spirit, “I will be that man.” D.L. Moody

How many of you know somebody with a BIG OLE Spiritual BUT?

I will serve God with everything in me BUT! Don’t send me to Africa.

I will serve you with everything in me BUT, I need to keep this nice house or this comfortable salary.

God I want to surrender my whole life to you BUT, this whole Tithing thing, you know I just can’t go there.

God, I want to serve you with everything in me BUT, you know the pre-marital sex thing, I mean a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.

How many of you know somebody with a BIG OLE Spiritual BUT?

How many of you have a Big Ole Spiritual But?

I want to serve you God but there’s this one thing. What is it for you?

Torrey described Moody as someone who was wholly and fully surrendered to God.This is my prayer today that God will make us wholly and fully surrendered to Him.

THE FULLY SURRENDERED LIFE

However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given methe task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace. Acts 20:24

Paul is saying, it’s no longer about my plans, my dreams, my hopes, my aspirations, and my goals. Instead, I want to only do what Jesus Christ has called me to do.

The Fully Surrendered Life with NO BUT’s

3 questions Moody would ask us today.

1)      ARE YOU DECREASING

(John the Baptist said) He must increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30 KJV

“I have had more trouble with D.L. Moody than any other man I’ve ever met.” D. L. Moody

Decreasing pride.

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ… Galatians 6:14a

When we work for the Lord we must be careful to keep the focus on Him and not on us. It is easy when people start to tell us what a difference we are making in their lives. It’s not us, it is Him.

“God sends no one away empty except the one who is full of himself.” D.L. Moody

Decreasing love of the world.

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  1 John 2:15

Is there a decreasing desire for the things of this world in your life?

Moody was making $5,000 per year as a shoe salesman, a lot of money in that day. When he started preaching $150.00 the first year.

Moody and Ira Sankey wrote a hymnal that sold enough to make them both millionaires and Moody wouldn’t take a dime of it. All of it went to other ministries.

It is not wrong to have nice things but it is wrong for nice things to have you. D.L. Moody

2) ARE YOU YIELDING TO GOD’S POWER?

God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto GodPsalms 62:11 KJV

Are you working in His power or yours?

Charles Finney said “It was like waves of liquid love washing over and over me.

“It was almost too sacred an experience to name – Paul had an experience of which he never spoke for fourteen years – I can only say God revealed himself to me.  I had such an experience of His holy love that I had to ask Him to stay His hand.”  D.L. Moody

When you seek after God, you will find Him. It will not just happen.

The world has yet to see what God will do with the person who has no BUTS.

3) DO YOU REALLY LOVE THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW CHRIST?

For most people, most Americans, the answer is NO! There is more judgment than love.

Most Christians are too busy judging people to love them.

Stop judging people and just share Christ.

How did you sleep last night?

More than a billion people in the world right now have never heard of Jesus.

More than 500 million people in the world are starving right now.

Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?  Luke 15:4

“I looked upon this world as a wrecked vessel. God has given me a lifeboat and said to me, “Moody, save all you can!” D. L. Moody

Moody made a promise to God, that he would not let 24 hours pass without telling someone about Jesus Christ.

“If God is your partner, make your plans large.” D. L. Moody

The wholly Surrendered Life – Is there something in your life that keeps you from turning everything over to God? God wants all of you today.
